Job Description

Our chickens and their eggs are the main face of our company and must be collected accurately. Egg collecting begins at 8am and finish at 11.30am 7 days a week. As this is a practical role the qualities we are looking for are common sense and manual dexterity.

The key responsibilities are:
To collect the eggs from the conveyor belt quickly and accurately and ensure trays are stacked safely on pallets in correct sizes
Ensure all pallets are wrapped and labelled correctly
Some repetitive manual lifting will be required, a box of eggs can weigh up to 20kg, and pallets will need moving by pallet truck
Accurate recording of daily egg collection numbers is important. Some basic Maths is required
Ensure the minimum number of seconds (dirty, cracked, misshaped, rough-shelled) eggs go onto the pallet
If required, ensure there are enough available eggs, on fibre trays, for the shop to sell
Accurate separating of different sized and graded eggs is necessary and important to ensure optimum prices are reached
Several times per shift a floor walk must be carried out. This involves entering the shed with 12,000 free range hens in it and collecting all the floor eggs. These are eggs that haven’t come down the conveyor and maybe ‘hidden’ in dark corners, under dead birds or in random places on the shed floor
Whilst completing floor walks it may be necessary to remove dead/injured birds
There is a need to be aware of the feed and water in the sheds and that the birds have availability to it
Ensure that the control room is left clean and tidy at the end of each shift, so that site is always ‘audit ready’
Ensure that all biosecurity measures are adhered to and have an awareness of food hygiene and general farming issues i.e avian influenza impact
To be aware of anomalies, changes in the flock, issues or anything out of the ordinary and report accordingly
Ability to work in a small team and to liaise with other team members about issues
Future prospects
There are always areas to grow into and as you develop and become more experienced then opportunities arise as and when the right candidate can rise to the challenge.
Things to consider
You will be working outdoors in all weathers. You will need your own transport to get to and from work. Uniform will be provided. Training will be given on the job and no formal qualifications are necessary. A standard 3 month probationary period will apply.
