Independent Person

Braintree District Council is seeking to appoint an Independent Person, together with up to two Reserve Independent Persons, as required by the Localism Act 2011, to help promote and maintain high ethical standards amongst its Members and Parish Councils within the District.

Salary: £750 per annum Independent Person / £250 per annum Reserve Independent Person

The Council welcomes applications from candidates with a keen interest in promoting high ethical standards in local government to assist with maintaining and prompting the Council''s own ethical standards.

Under the provisions of the Localism Act 2011, all Local Authorities are required to have in place a Code of Conduct which governs elected Members'' conduct in the exercising of their duties. As an Independent Person your fair and impartial judgment will be sought and taken into account, in the event of the Council receiving an allegation that the Code of Conduct has been breached.

You will be required to develop and apply knowledge of the Code of Conduct and provide a view on the conduct of the Council''s Members from an external perspective, which reflects the expectations and views of the local community.

Candidates with an understanding of governance and high standards of personal integrity and impartiality, and experience within local or national government or with legal process, tribunals or quasi-judicial bodies is desirable.

A fixed allowance will be paid together with reasonable expenses for travel.
