Job Description
Additive Manufacturing/3D Printing R&D Metallurgist/Materials Scientist: to £45k
A leading innovator in developing novel alloys and high purity spherical metal powders seeks a Additive Manufacture focused Metallurgist with Industry or Post-Doctoral Research experience to work on the development of advanced alloys, processes, and process equipment capability for a broad range of end applications, including as part of multi-organisation research collaborations.
Your development of new particle materials, and surface modification work, will be applied towards a diverse and exciting range of leading edge technologies such as Lithium Battery development, Cold Spray metal structure repair for the Aerospace industry, optimized Magnetic properties for next generation high efficiency Electric Motors for the Automotive industry, Powder Metal Injection Moulding, and Re-engineering of metal powders from process by-products. Common to these, and many other applications, will be the use of the Metal Powders in manufacturing/product development such as Additive Laser Manufacturing / Metal 3D Printing (including into complex structures), and Welding (including joining of dissimilar metals/alloys).
Your experience will include working with advanced novel alloys of metals inclusive of Aluminium or Iron or Nickel, or Titanium, amongst others. You will develop process and related instrumentation to enable the reproducibility and high performance of the new metal powders. As well as Additive Manufacture / 3D printing your experience will include more than one of the following: PVD, Sputtering, CVD, or Fluidised Beds in metal coating processes; Gas Atomisation; Sintering and other Heat Treatment of metal powders; Hot Isostatic pressing (HIP); Induction Heating; Coldmelt; and Wire Casting; amongst other comparable methodologies associated with high performance metal powders.
Minimum of a PhD in Metallurgy / Materials Science with either 3 years+ Industry experience or 3years+ in a Post-Doctoral Research environment, having attained Research Associate or Research Fellow status. A fresh PhD may be considered too, though core to your PhD will need to be the development of new advanced metal powders or related metallurgy. Advantageous will be exposure ton the use of various surface science/materials analysis instrumentation such as SEM, EDXS, XRD or Tem.
Industrial experienced candidates whom have PhDs attained in Physics, Physical Chemistry, or Chemical Engineering will also be considered, provided your post-doctoral experience is in Metal Powders, and ideally related to Additive Manufacture / 3D Printing. UK Work entitlement required.
