Principal Policy Adviser

The role of Principal Policy Adviser will be based in our Cannon Place office and will require regional travel as well as hybrid working. An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated individual to become a Principal Policy Adviser in the CBI''s Policy Unit, at a crucial time for the industry and the wider economy.

The CBI''s Policy Unit provides the organisation with a flexible and agile team of policy professionals with expertise across several areas, working together to respond to the agenda of the time and expanding the CBI''s presence on emerging issues. The team has a key role to play in supporting the theme teams to succeed, holding content knowledge on key pillars of the membership proposition that are not driven by themes, and horizon scanning to pick up emerging priorities.

The successful candidate will collaborate across the CBI''s policy teams - including with public affairs & media, economics, and business propositions to develop targeted policy campaigns and B2B offerings across a wide range of different issues. He /she will also need to engage with CEO and board level executives to develop leading policy positions.

Reporting into the Deputy Director of the Policy Unit, the Principal Policy Advisor''s role is highly varied, responsible for leading policy development and lobbying, as well as driving membership growth, and being a key external representative with government and other stakeholders. The jobholder will be supporting the CBI''s work on emerging policy issues including:

Consulting with CBI members to develop policy positions that represent the business view on a wide range of potential issues from regulation to supply chain challenges.
Co-ordinating with colleagues in the Seize the Moment themes, public affairs, and membership teams to ensure consistency and coherence in our messages to government and businesses
Working with civil servants to shape policy to support the objectives of UK businesses
Contribute to the development of a compelling offer on how the CBI can support business to overcome immediate challenges to growth as part of a wider effort to encourage more businesses to join the CBI
Providing CBI members with political and policy insight and intelligence so they can make more informed commercial decisionsAt a time of unprecedented political and economic change, the role offers a unique opportunity to lead on a crucial areas of policy development for British industry at the UK''s largest business representative organisation.

Key Responsibilities

Leading policy development & lobbying campaigns

Lead development of CBI policy positions that respond to the challenges and opportunities facing businesses, including production of original research and analysis of policy that affects the cross economy.
Working with CBI members to continually develop policy positions, including managing competing business and commercial interests to produce messages with broad support
Working on discrete projects (e.g. policy briefs, reports, and consultation responses), using project management skills to track progress, manage risk and measure success
Working closely with other CBI policy teams to ensure full range perspectives are represented in cross-cutting policy areas of relevance.
Drafting of papers, policy briefs and CBI responses, for example supporting engagement between the CBI leadership team and senior government ministers.Helping to develop a range of products and services to support business decision making and action:

Gaining a deep knowledge of business initiatives to take advantage of the opportunities associated with the CBI''s economic vision
Working with the CBI Proposition Managers and the wider team to design and deliver products that support practical action by businesses. These could include ''how-to'' guides, policy explainers or workshops.Manging government and stakeholder relati
